1. Dental Cleaning and Examinations: Regular exams and cleanings prevent the accumulation of plaque and calculus around the teeth and under the gums. Removal of these deposits, through scaling, along with digital x-ray exams can help prevent tooth decay, gingivitis, bone loss, halitosis (bad breath), and tooth loss.

2. Root Canal Treatment: Root canal is a procedure used to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth instead of removing it. With advances in dentistry, and the precision of our endodontist, most patients have little if any pain with a root canal.

3. Tooth Extraction: Some of the reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted include:

  • Significant decay or damage to the tooth
  • Gum disease
  • To improve appearance, such as with orthodontic treatment
  • Extensive tooth cracks
  • Poor positioning or functionality

Tooth extraction can be completed in the Dental chair using local anaesthetic, under intravenous sedation in the dental chair or under general anaesthetic in a private hospital.

The extraction procedure may or may not involve surgery. The procedure will be determined by a patient’s health, age, the location of the tooth and the complexity of the root formation.

Your dentist will discuss the best treatment options for you, and will require an x-ray of the tooth concerned in order to view the root location and formation, and the density of the supporting bone.

Once a tooth has been removed, your dentist will provide you with the treatment options available for replacing the lost tooth. This may include options such as implants, fixed bridges or dentures.

As with all types of surgery, dental extractions have associated risks and possible post operative complications. These will be discussed with you prior to the commencement of any procedure.

The cost of having a tooth extracted or removed varies depending on the tooth and the complexity of the extraction procedure. Your dentist will provide you with a treatment plan outlining the cost of the treatment prior to treatment.

1. Composite Fillings: If your dentist decides to fill a cavity, he or she will first remove the decay and clean the affected area. The cleaned cavity will then be filled with any of the variety of materials described above.

2. Dental Bonding: Cosmetic dental bonding is pretty simple, but if your teeth are yellow or stained, you may consider whitening your teeth prior to dental bonding treatments since the composite material cannot be whitened.

A custom composite shade will be matched to your natural teeth so that the bonding will blend well and be practically undetectable.

First, we will etch (roughen) the surface of your tooth. A conditioning agent will be applied to prepare your tooth to bond to the composite material.

Next, composite material will be applied in several layers and hardened with a special curing light.

Once the final layer is applied, the composite will be polished and smoothed, so it blends well with your enamel.

3. Dental Crowns: A custom-made dental crown fits over a prepared natural tooth and replaces the natural crown, which is the part of the tooth that is visible above the gums.

Dental crowns not only improve the appearance of ones smile, but can add strength, durability and stability.

4. Dental Veneers: Veneers involve a cosmetic dentistry procedure in which thin tooth coloured porcelain or composite resin facings are bonded to the front of one or more teeth.

Veneers are more conservative that dental crowns and can be a good cosmetic dental option for patients with the following dental concerns:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Stained or discoloured teeth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked, oddly shaped or misaligned teeth

Dentures and Partial Dentures

A fixture (or implant body) made from biocompatible surgical grade titanium artificially replaces tooth roots and provides an anchor for the overlying prostheses.

An abutment serves to connect the implant body and the artificial crowns, bridges or dentures.

The crown, bridge or denture which replaces your missing teeth to give you back your full smile!

  • Implants help maintain and keep your jawbone intact
  • No need to sacrifice the health of adjacent teeth
  • Longer average lifespan
  • Better aesthetic and functional properties

Dentures and Partial Dentures

 1. Adjusting to New Dentures: Adjusting to new dentures can be difficult, no matter if the patient is getting partial or full dentures. There are several reasons why adjusting to dentures can take time, but it will be worth it when an individual is able to smile using a full set of teeth. With dentures, a patient will gain both the natural appearance and functionality of teeth again.

2. Denture Care: For a patient with removable dentures, it is crucial to remove them at night and thoroughly clean them. At least once a day, preferably at night, the individual needs to remove the dentures and carefully rinse off any loose food particles. However, the individual will not want to use typical toothpaste to clean the dentures.

Regular toothpaste can actually damage the base of the dentures due to the abrasive particles in the toothpaste. There are specific denture cleaning fluids that one can purchase to use for cleaning the dentures. We can go over where to get these solutions during a consultation. It is also wise to get a specific brush to clean the dentures. Using a brittle toothbrush can actually do more damage than good to the dentures.

When cleaning these dentures, it is important to keep the dentures above a towel or soft surface. Dropping the dentures, even just a few inches above a hard surface, can cause them to crack or break. Dentures must stay wet at all times and must not become dry.

Thus, it is best to keep the dentures in water when one is not wearing them at night. In some cases, patients can keep their dentures in a cleaning solution overnight but will want to ask the dentist if that is best.

By following these steps or the directions that a dentist gives, the patient will be able to continue wearing the dentures for long periods of time without damaging the dentures.

We may recommend regular check-ups to help keep an eye on the patient's oral health to ensure the dentures are in working order.

If the dentures are not removable and stick to the patient's gums, then the dentist will recommend a different cleaning regimen. In many cases, caring for implant dentures will be the same as taking care of regular teeth with brushing twice a day. Patients need to take care of their gums and mouth as well.

2. Braces: Demi Dental understands the importance of how straight teeth can influence one’s appearance and overall confidence and self-esteem.

Orthodontics not only provides positive cosmetic results but can also play an important role in reducing the need for future dental treatment.

Crooked and crowded teeth are often more difficult to clean and maintain which can contribute to conditions which cause tooth decay along with eventual gum disease and tooth loss.

Other orthodontic problems can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function and excessive stress on gum and bone. In addition, misalignment of the jaw joint can even cause chronic headaches or pain in the face or neck.

Children and adults alike can benefit from orthodontic treatment as healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age.

It is however recommended that all children have an orthodontic screening no later than age seven, as some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if treated early.

3. Invisalign® vs Traditional Braces: If you are looking into orthodontics options for your teen, it is important to consider Invisalign® vs. traditional braces for teens.

You should also know what both solutions look like on a daily basis. Essentially, any orthodontic solution will move teeth by applying pressure.

This pressure has to be placed on the right teeth at the right time so that gradually, they move into position. Both solutions do an excellent job.

At the end of the day it really comes down to lifestyle, convenience, and what your teen will feel confident wearing.
